This briefing provides an update on innovations in Rights of Nature and ecological law across the United States, and their overlap with health equity and climate justice. Rights of Nature — the recognition of ecosystems, rivers, and natural entities as rights holders — is being utilized as a tool of municipal governance, with growing movements at the state level as well. This sits alongside a growing toolkit of ecological law innovations, from Green Amendments enshrining the right to a healthy environment, to innovative zoning tools, river daylighting, and legal guardianship models that give nature a voice in law.

Local governments are emerging as key strongholds of justice and innovation in this space, often moving faster than state or federal law to test tools that protect both ecosystems and the communities most affected by their degradation. Together, these approaches offer new pathways to address the environmental conditions driving health disparities, and complementary strategies for funders and advocates working across environmental justice, public health, and climate resilience. While this webinar focuses on municipal tools, it will also highlight the clear leadership of Tribal Nations in the Rights of Nature and ecological law space.
