Ecuador and Ocean Rights

The first country in the world to recognize Rights of Nature on a national level, Ecuador has also implemented defense of those rights from the Vilcabamba River to the Galapagos Islands.

ELC partners with CEDENMA, IUCN, Hugo Echeverria, Godfrey Merlen, Charles Darwin Foundation and GARN to advance ocean rights – specifically to:

  • Ensure rights of nature is implemented in Ecuador’s oceanscape;

  • Create a pilot project report on implementation, best practices and challenges;

  • Advance rights of nature judicially, such as holding government accountable for harm to sharks; and
